This is my entry for the Merrell Diorama Contest.
In my family, Christmas takes a big place. Every year we used to celebrate Christmas together with my grand mother, my grand father, my dad, my mom, my uncles, my aunts, and my cousins. It was the only time of the year where we could be all together.
But my treasured fall memory doesn't take place on Christmas. It took place on the last sunday of november when I was 10 years old.
Every year, on the last sunday of november, my mom, my dad and I, we used to decorate the house for christmas. I know it's early for some people but in my family it is a sort of a tradition, the house is being decorated for the begining of the advent period, one month of excitement before Christmas. It used to be a fun day, but, since I am an only child, I used to find it a bit sad and boring too.
That year, when I was 10 years old, my grand mother and grand father surprised us and came home with two of my cousins. We decorated the house all together. My grand mother cooked a pie, then she went back to her knitting needles. My mom, both of my cousins and I, decorated the living room with the christmas tree and few other decorations. We had that big cardboard box where we used to put away all the christmas stuff. All the images are very clear in my mind.
I remember my mom carrying my youngest cousin to make him put the christmas star on the top of the christmas tree.
My grand father was in charge of cleening the fallen leaves in the garden. Hard work since there it's often windy where I live! And my dad decorated the big tree in the garden with our huge red and gold christmas balls. He also hung that one big fake candy cane on the wall of the garden.
And my kitten broke at least 2 christmas ball while playing with them when they where attached to the christmas tree!
It was a very unique and magic day and I will cherish it all my life because this is what I call "Christmas magic", and also because it never happened again after because of a family dispute. Now we're all grown up, my grand father is gone, we my cousin and I all have our lives butI try to keep the tradition of Christmas with my "own" family, and I hope my children will have the same memory as me one day!
Materials used :
The shoebox measures : 34cm x 21,5cm x 12,5cm.
The house measures around 25cm to the top of the roof.
All the characters, the bushes, the christmas crown on the door, the paving stones, the candy cane, the christmas socks are made out of cold porcelain (I made myself the cold porcelain, it's an air dry clay), sculpted by hand.
The christmas tree is made out of cold porcelain and I used an old christmas light string that I've inserted inside the porcelain while it was still soft. The christmas light string works on batteries. The christmas balls are also made out of cold porcelain, and painted with gouache. Some of them have glitters on them.
The chimney is made out of cardboard and cover with cold porcelain. Inside the chimney there is a battery led and a flame drawn on the computer, printed and cut.
The tree in the garden is made out of wire for the structure, covered with cold porcelain and painted with gouache. The leaves are made out of cold porcelain, then painted with water color.
The ladder is bought from a local store and painted with water colors.
The wood pile is real wood from my garden. The little house over the house is made out of cardboard and painted with gouache.
The grass is made out of felt.
The house is made out of foam cardboard for the walls, cold porcelain for the roof, cellophane for the windows. The wallpapers are drawn by me on the computer, then printed and cut.
The couch is made out of foam cardboard for the structure, and cover with fabric. The pillows are seewn by hand.
The two prints on the walls are my own paintings (they are in my gallery).
The walls of the garden are bamboo placemat that I've cut and glued on foam cardboard.
The cardboard box is made with the cardboard of a toilet paper.
Thank you very much for this contest, it's the first time I make a diorama and it was a lot of fun. It took me the entire month to complete it but it was worth it!
